It was Bella’s eighth birthday and her mother had wakened her, telling her she would pick out a present for herself. Upon entrance of the shop Bella could not believe her mother would make her pick an object from such a disgusting shop. Surely only the lowest of people frequented such a place. This was not want she wanted. At once Bella’s foot landed upon the disgusting wooden floor. The effect of her tantrum was ruined by a storm of dust rising to attack her in the face.

“Well.” Her mother saved her words for when necessary and Bellatrix knew this meant her mother thought the dust on her face was fit for her tantrum and she would receive a punishment for dirtying herself later.

One wave of her mother’s hand sent her to look at the wares of the appalling shack. Bella’s heart broken from the lack of stuffed animals, she felt an odd glowing feeling when she approached a tiny porcelain figure. Green glass eyes attracted her own. She moved to caress the black hair so much like her own. An odd feeling covered her, her body unable to move, the black tendrils wrapping around each individual finger and cutting through her gloves. Much too late she realized how wicked this doll was. The red-painted lips on the porcelain face had quirked upwards in a devious smile.

“Mrs. Black, your daughter!” Burkes was frightened, afraid to lose the patronage of one of his best clients.

“Yes?” The woman stood coldly, taking in the scene.

“How dare you.” Bella snarled at the offending doll, brought out of the spell by her jaded mother. Her little hand, bloody from where the tendrils had cut past the gloves, pulled away and she forced back a flinch as skin pulled back. Showing weakness in front of her mother was something she would not do. The doll’s blue eyes widened in shock, red lips pouting at her as Bella’s face twisted. A sickening crash came from where Bella had thrown the doll, sending the beautiful porcelain skin into hundreds of sharp pieces.

Mrs. Black stood at the front register, looking down at her daughter. Their eyes locked in a fierce battle before Bella turned away. Someday she would get her stuffed bear. Today she had to choose one of these disgusting objects. Her bloody hand locked on a dusty tome and she barely managed to carry it to the counter. “I want this.”

“From Cruciatus to Killing Curses: Reasons why Unforgivables are quite forgivable?” Mr. Burkes looked down upon the tiny girl in shock. Her dark eyes peeked from heavy-lidded eyes as if to defy her. “Yes, yes I shall wrap it up.”

“I see.” Mrs. Black put one gloved hand upon Bella’s shoulder to show her pleasure in such a choice. Well, she had been aiming more for a fairy tale book than such a dark book, but at least it was something to get her out of this disgusting area.
