Summary: How Scorpius realised he was in love.
Author's Notes: I've got nothing.

It was the first night back from the long summer. Scorpius, for one, was excited to be back at Hogwarts. He disliked Malfoy Manor. It was cold in a way the dungeons could not manage. Too quiet for his tastes, really. His father and mother did not talk to each other, his father only speaking to him in order to reprimand him. Grandfather Lucius was forever silent, his cold eyes taking in every action and making him seem like a ghost in his own home. The only touch of warmth at the drafty old manor was Grandmother Cissy. In public she put on a face, but he enjoyed being alone with her. She was more a mother than a grandmother and she kept the silence at bay with her laughter.

He found himself smiling as he settled in the Great Hall for the Beginning of the Year Feast. The sounds of new students shuffling in, excited chatter among everybody, and then the silence as Headmistress McGonagall gave the yearly speech. Silence reigned, but even the silence he experienced now was different from the cold silence at Malfoy manor. Hundreds of eyes were focused as the Headmistress sat down and Professor Neville Longbottom stood up, unwrapping the parchment and calling each name carefully. It was hard to believe he was the boy his father described in stories when he was younger. When he was pleasant.

Scorpius' claps were automatic. His mind elsewhere as he listened to the chatter among his peers. Torn between thoughts of home and happiness he was in what he considered his true home. His blue eyes scanned the crowded area, finally resting on the Gryffindor table. The last of the names was called and he clapped one last time, his eyes trained upon Albus Severus' face. He looked genuinely happy as the new student took his place among the Gryffindors. To the left of Albus Severus, a boy was ribbing him, making him laugh as he grabbed at some of the newly appeared food. Emerald eyes flickered over to meet his for a moment, his lips still parted in a laugh. Scorpius sent a scowl at a subtle 'hmph' at his rival.

Now realising that the food was present, Scorpius forced himself to make conversation as dinner progressed. He listened to all the dull stories of his friends, occasionally smirking when they did something amazingly ridiculous or stupid. He had a feeling most stories were made up anyways. The inbred doubt of a Slytherin really.

His eyes drifted once more as he lifted a cloth to wipe at the edge of his mouth. Without knowing it, he realised he was staring at Albus Severus again. He had been in mid-laughter again, a spoonful of some white creamy substance lifted towards his lips. A dot of the food was on the edge of his lips. Scorpius watched with an odd fascination as Albus Severus' tongue slowly slid from between his lips, licking the food from the side of his mouth. It was oddly... alluring. A realisation with both horrified and disturbed Scorpius. Then he realised he had been caught. Emerald eyes locked with blue ones as Albus Severus closed his mouth, giving a smirk any Slytherin would have been proud of. Scorpius almost fell off of his chair when the other boy winked, laughing at the look of shock on his face before turning back to speak with his friends and shovel more food into his mouth.

Scorpius felt odd. His normally pale face was flushed, his heart beating, an odd tightening in his jeans, and his stomach was churning like it never had before. His eyes flicked around in a panic, hoping for something calming. Some way of figuring out what was wrong. When he looked at his peers he felt himself calm. His heart was normal, his face slowly returning to a normal tone, and his stomach finally at ease. He lost himself in conversation.

By the end of dinner, all thoughts of Albus Severus were lost. Or at least he had thought so. People were filing out of the Great Hall, finished with dinner. Unfortunately, since Zabini was being slow, Scorpius was forced to hold back. They were leaving side to side with a set of Gryffindors. He felt an odd heat as his arm brushed against another boy's, his head turning to see Albus Severus. Instead of making a rude jibe though, he felt... odd. The younger boy had been laughing as a red-headed girl scolded a Hufflepuff. The Gryffindor's cousins, he realised with a start. Then, it happened. His eyes were focused on Albus Severus as he chuckled again, speeding up Scorpius' heart. Not paying attention, he felt himself trip and managed to catch himself before he lost his air of dignity.

"All right, Malfoy?" Albus Severus smiled at him, a look not really of concern on his face. It was more amusement since he seemed the only one to catch Scorpius' loss of poise for the moment. Scorpius' face flushed as he admired the way the other boy's lips tilted in a friendly smile. His stomach churned and without a thought for Zabini he propelled himself from the immediate area.

Scorpius finally stopped in a hall near the dungeons, his hand over his heart as he fought the odd feelings he was having. A memory of earlier in the evening, Albus Severus winking at him, forced its way in his mind. It hit him all at once. Like being doused with cold water, his body straightened and he stared into space with moderate horror. He was crushing on a boy. Not just any boy. He was in love with Albus Severus Potter.
